Veterans Legal Clinic Client to be Honored with Long-Awaited Purple Heart at Wake Forest Football Game

Veterans Legal Clinic client, Mr. James Brown, will be awarded his long-awaited Purple Heart for injuries sustained during combat in the Korean War. Due to the clinic's efforts, Mr. Brown was also awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge and his punitive discharge, which was fueled in part by racism, was set aside. The Purple Heart ceremony will be held during halftime of the November 12th Wake Forest football game (game start time is 7:30 PM). Clinic student William Crotty (BS ' 16, JD '22) and Clinic Director Eleanor Morales (JD '10) will join Mr. Brown on the field. Come out and celebrate this moment Mr. Brown has waited for over 70 years.

Conversation and Book Signing

Author Corban Addison of Wastelands: The True Story of Farm Country on Trial; Nov. 9

Imagine your ancestral home suddenly being sprayed with hog manure that gets on your clothes, kitchen countertops, and eating utensils. Imagine a multibillion dollar corporation creating similar situations across predominantly Black and Hispanic counties in eastern North Carolina under the protection of the North Carolina legislature. Imagine after years of frustration and futility, an impassioned cadre of local residents, led by a team of intrepid and dedicated Wake Forest-trained lawyers, files lawsuits against one of the world’s most powerful companies—and, miraculously, they win.

Join us for a discussion with Corban Addison, author of Wastelands: The True Story of Farm Country on Trial, and Mona Lisa Wallace (JD '79, P '08), lead plaintiffs’ attorney in the lawsuits that brought the concentrated animal feeding industry to heel. This discussion is co-sponsored by Yadkin Riverkeeper.

STUDENT FOCUS

Wake Forest Law Appellate Advocacy Clinic Students Write Their Way To The United States Supreme Court

In May 2022, Wake Forest Law students Sophia Sulzer (JD ’23), Maryclaire Farrington (JD ’23), and Jacob Winton (JD ’23) were preparing for their last Summer Recess before the start of their 3L year. All three students were enrolled in the Appellate Advocacy Clinic, led by Clinic Director Professor John Korzen, and assumed that their clinic work would begin at the start of the Fall 2022 Semester. They never imagined that they would be making a trip to Washington, D.C. for an experience law students dream about. Sulzer, Farrington, and Winton spent their summers not only working at full-time internships, but also virtually collaborating to write an amicus brief that would be filed in the United States Supreme Court.

On October 11, 2022, the United States Supreme Court heard arguments in National Pork Producers Council v. Ross, a case involving a constitutional challenge under the dormant Commerce Clause to California's ban on the sale of pork when California banned the sale of pork when it is produced inhumanely. Even though the case centers around pork production, the ruling will have implications for all sorts of local ordinances and legislation. The students had submitted an amicus brief to the court on behalf of local government organizations to share the local government perspective on the case, providing examples of local legislation that could be affected.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT

Jennifer L. Martin ('96, JD '99)

When you talk to Jennifer Martin about her work, two recurring sentiments come up again and again: the honor she feels for her roles in serving others, and the importance of Pro Humanitate in fostering a successful community.

Martin's journey to her career as a DA started her 1L year when she joined Wake Forest Law's fledgling Domestic Violence Advocacy Coalition (DVAC), an experiential program developed through the joint efforts of Suzanne Reynolds and the Legal Aid Society. "Because of Wake Forest, I got a clinical experience that was unbelievable. What I learned in DVAC–understanding the cycle of domestic violence–made me a stronger prosecutor. And I felt like I was ahead of my classmates in understanding people who are in need, people who are in poverty, people who are victims of violence. Everything I learned at Wake Forest gave me the foundation for the career that I chose."

Martin started off in the program meeting with women and helping them do their paperwork. "I was then able to transition to a clinical student in District Attorney Tom Keith’s (JD ‘70) office,” she says. “So I found a career for myself volunteering while also getting an education." And the attorneys under which Martin worked during her third year didn't just sit her down and assign her paperwork. They were ready to allow her to practice on "low-pressure" cases such as speeding and traffic violations.

"For me, it was a huge deal to go into a courtroom and stand in front of a judge in your third year and act as a lawyer. You get that taste for the profession and the gravity for what your responsibilities are. With your voice in that courtroom, you are representing the state, and I don't take that for granted," says Martin. The DAs didn't take Martin for granted either, and she was offered a job before she even took the bar. "My home has been with the DA's office since I graduated in 1999."

You can read more about Jennifer Martin’s story in the forthcoming 2022 edition of Wake Forest Law’s Jurist magazine.
